5 December

Nikolausabend (Nikolaus’ Eve)

On the evening of 5 December, children in Germany put their boots outside their front door. During the night, St Nikolaus secretly visits the children’s homes and fills their boots with chocolates, oranges and nuts. Does this sound familiar? Yes! – St Nikolaus is the German Father Christmas. In fact, the name ‘Santa Claus’ is short for St Nikolaus.

In order to complete his rounds, St Nikolaus has to start very early and has to leave his home way before midnight. He lives in Himmelpfort (Heaven’s fortress) where he keeps all the toys. He doesn’t have elves helping him but there is usually someone travelling with him…
We’ll tell you more about that tomorrow.

Learn to sing a St Nikolaus song!

Lasst uns froh und munter sein,
und uns recht von Herzen freun!
Lustig, lustig, trallerallera!
Bald ist Nikolausabend da,
bald ist Nikolausabend da!

Dann stell ich den Teller auf,
Nikolaus legt gewiss was drauf.
Lustig, lustig, trallerallera!
Bald ist Nikolausabend da,
bald ist Nikolausabend da!

Let’s be happy and jolly,
And rejoice with all our hearts.
Fun, fun, tra la la ra!
Nikolaus eve will soon be here,
Nikolaus eve will soon be here!

Then I will put my plate out
and Nikolaus will quickly fill it.
Fun, fun, tra la la ra!
Nikolaus eve will soon be here,
Nikolaus eve will soon be here!
